ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Chemistry was started with UG & PG Programmes in the year 2003 and then the research programmes like M.Phil and PhD were started in the year 2009 and 2011 respectively. The Department is having well furnished laboratories and the faculty strength about 18, out of which 10 are qualified with PhD degree and having good experience in teaching as well as in research activities. The students strength of our Department is 443, out of which UG alone 395.
Under the able guidance of the dedicated faculty, the students have shown remarkable achievements in curricular and co-curricular activities. Through the active Marie Curie Club, Students have conducted number of activities like Quiz Competition in Science, Debate in both English and Tamil on the Common issues in society, Mehandhi Competition etc with the guidance of faculty members.
Guest Lectures, Conferences and seminars (National/International) were organized to create scientific temper among the students and teachers have motivated them to scale up in research. In this academic year 2019-20, we have got opportunity to sign MoU with RI Instruments& Innovations India, Uttrakand. This may help us to establish R & D Lab with HI Tech equipments for our students to do their high level research in the field of their interest.
The well qualified faculty members of the Department actively involved in research pertaining to their chosen fields such as Nano Science, Organic, Inorganic, Polymer and Environmental Chemistry and published number of quality research papers in the high impact Journals and also guided their students to publish articles in the reputed journals.
Since our College is a Autonomous Institution and is following OBEs, the Department is extending facilities to the students of other Departments to learn and acquire knowledge in some of the area of Chemistry for their carrier development under banner of NMEC courses. The following are the NMEC courses offered by the Chemistry Department in the ODD and EVEN Semester for the final year students
1. Industrial Chemistry
2. Water Analysis
3. Water treatment
Apart from this, Chemistry Department conducts the Certificate Course in Textile Chemistry (Both theory and practical classes) to the first and second year students of who have registered. The classes for Certificate and Value Added courses are being conducted in the afternoon after the regular class hours.
We have conducted many placement drives in our College campus with more than twenty five companies including software company ,core company and bank sectors. As a result, nearly 40 percent of our final year students got placed.

With a high standard for excellence in all three areas the department will produce students who are knowledgeable in chemistry and can think critically.
