ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Botany department has been established in the Vivekananda College of Arts and Sciences for Women in the year of 2004 to impart knowledge for students. The department has attained the UGC programme through sustained hard work of faculty members and students of PG & Research Department of Botany. We have 10 faculty members in our department and all are Ph. D. holders except one faculty. They are engaged in various valuable and innovative researches. The department of Botany is offering B.Sc., M.Sc., M.Phil. andPh.D. programmes. Botanydepartment has been started initially to teach traditional Botany and it has diversified in recent years to offer various fields such as Organic farming, Environmental Biology, Herbal Botany, Mushroom Culture, Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering. As of now very usefulsyllabushas been framed to create unique knowledge for students to develop their career. The Herbarium, a Centre for Plant Taxonomic Research has established in this department. Very hugenumbers of herbarium specimens have been deposited in this herbarium for plant identification.The department is provided with a mushroom culture centre in which students of UG are trained in mushroom cultivation and also in its marketing strategies. The department has four research centres such as Tissue culture, Microscope, Mushroom cultivation and Algal culture collections. Till now, 3 scholars have obtained Ph.D., degree and 30 got their M.Phil., degree. The department has signed MoU with renowned organizations such as KS Varier'sAshtangaAyurvedic (P) Ltd., Tiruchirappalli and Tamilnadu Scientific Research Organization (TNSRO), Pudukkottai. The department has established the Botanical Garden and Green House in the Academic year of 2019-20, and it has more than 250 herbal medicinal and ornamental plants. The department is always one among the leading famous departments in the Institution by showing unique performance in various research activities. The faculty members are undertaking research in Taxonomy, Ethnobotany, Plant Tissue culture, Molecular genetics, Ecology and Phytochemistry. The department has got various funded research projects from UGC, TNSCST, NABARD, NBA, MoEF and MEFCC. Through this we can make the students to design their research career in fruitful way.The department is also organizing various National and International level Workshops, Seminars, Symposium with financial assistance from various funding agencies to inculcate the current scenario of research. The department has published more than 100 Research papers and 3 Booklets. The department has organized 3 International and 7 National Conferences, 10 Workshops, Herbal Expo and Wild Photography Exhibition.
