About the Department

The Department of Tamil was established in the year 2003 with 12 students and 3 staff Members with the aim to offer enriching learning experiences to aspiring young women an undergraduate program (B.A Tamil) followed by M.A. Tamil in 2006 and established the research program providing M. Phil (FT) and Ph.D research program (FT/PT) in TAMIL providing from 2009 onwards. The Department has 238 students (181 undergraduate students, 33 Post graduate students, 14 M. Phil scholars and 10 Ph.D scholars) with 8 well qualified faculty members devoted in enriching the knowledge and wisdom of the students. The Department has well furnished class rooms with Highly equipped smart class room, separate Tamil library with e-books and digital library facilities.

Updated Curriculum

The curriculum offered to the students lays the foundation for a conceptual and analytical understanding of Indian and international literary field. The Tamil programme is designed to closely integrate current Tamil culture and environment history.

Every week-end students encouraged their skills through students Associations of viyala vattam and tholkappia aivarangam.

Placement Hour

Every day rigorous training on placement skills with competitive exam.

Soft Skill Development

The practical class is designed in a way that enables the students to improve their lab skills and research aptitude using advanced techniques and instrumentation facilities.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum pass in HSC or equivalent examinations and the eligibility criteria fixed by the Periyar university and Tamilnadu Government.

Duration of the course

3 years (six semesters)

PG Course

Eligibility criteria

  • Pass in a recognized Bachelor’s degree of minimum 3 years duration
  • Student should have 10+2+3 years pattern of Education
  • The eligibility criteria fixed by the Periyar university and Tamilnadu Government

M. Phil TAMIL (FT)

Eligibility criteria

Candidates who have qualified for Post Graduate Degree of this University or any other University recognized by the Syndicate as equivalent thereto shall be eligible to register for the Degree of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.,) in their respective subjects and undergo the prescribed course of study in an approved institution or Department of this University. Candidates who have qualified for their Post Graduate Degree on or after 19th September 1991 shall be required to have obtained a minimum of 55% of marks in their respective Post Graduate Degrees to become eligible to register for the degree of the Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.,) and undergo the prescribed course of study in an approved institution or Department of this University.

For the candidates belonging to SC/ST community and those who have qualified for the Master’s degree before 19th September 1991 the minimum eligibility marks shall be 50% in their Master’s Degree.

Duration

1 Year (2 semesters)

Ph.D TAMIL (FT/ PT)

Eligibility criteria

A candidate should have obtained a Master’s degree with not less than 55% of marks or an equivalent grade. For the candidates belonging to SC/ST community and those who have qualified a Master’s degree before 19th September 1991 the minimum eligibility marks shall be 50% in their Master’s degree.

Duration

  • Minimum three years and maximum period of five years for full time candidates from the period of provisional registration.
  • Minimum four years and maximum six years from the period of provisional registration.
