About the Department

Department of Mathematics was established in the year 2000 with the introduction of the Undergraduate Course in Mathematics. The postgraduate degree programme was started in the year 2002. M.Phil Mathematics was started in the year 2011. The aim is to offer enriching learning experiences to aspiring young women scholars and to ensure special talents in various domains of Mathematics. At present the department has 1445 MATHEMATICS students (1057 students in B.Sc , 359 students in M.Sc, and 29 students in M.Phil) and 45 faculty members with 2 non-teaching staff. Department of Mathematics is functioning under Vivekanandha College of Arts and Sciences for Women, an Autonomous Institution and Affiliated to Periyar University, Salem.

Salient Features

Approach

The Department monitors the overall academic activity of staffs and students following the IQAC norms and teaching – learning process is evaluated periodically through academic records. The Quality Management system (QMS) of ISO 9001: 2008 system appraises the academic performance.

Updated Curriculam

The autonomous system helps us to organize an updated curriculum involving subject experts, industrial experts and a board of experienced faculty members and alumni students. The introduction of skill based and non major electives, soft skill and value added education has enhanced the students to acquire broad knowledge in the subject.

Advanced teaching methodology

The advanced teaching aids like OHP projection and LCD power point presentation were used to improve the understanding of the subject by the students. The quiz programs, group discussions and skit plays are also adopted in teaching – learning process for the better understanding of the concept and evaluated through continuous internal assessment (CIA).

Summer training

Students are encouraged to attend summer training and mini projects to gain practical skill and hands-on experience.

Student’s Activities

Sigma club is functioning in our department to bring out the students hidden talent. Many students’ activities like quiz program, paper presentation, and group discussion conducted frequently under sigma club. On the remembrance of legend Ramanujan, every year on December 22 Ramanujan Aptitude Test will be conducted to improve the student’s aptitude skills. Prize winners will receive the cash award. Model bank exam is also conducted every year to enhance the student’s ability and employability skills.

Placement training

The final year students were given placement training from the beginning of the year by eminent HR experts and MNC personalities through centralized placement cell so as to organize them to face the placement recruitment drive at the end of the year.

Lab skill

The practical class is designed in a way that enables the students to improve their lab skills and research aptitude using advanced techniques and instrumentation facilities.

Minimum pass in HSC or equivalent examinations and the eligibility criteria fixed by the Periyar university and Tamilnadu Government.

  • Pass in a recognized Bachelor’s degree of minimum 3 years duration
  • Student should have 10+2+3 years pattern of Education

PG with 55 % marks and a pass in the entrance examination conducted by the institution.
