English Department

About the Department

Department of English was established in the year 2003 with 57 students and 3 staff members with the aim to offer enriching learning experiences to aspiring young women scholars and to ensure special talents in various domains. At present the department has 1100 ENGLISH LITERATURE students (720 students in BA , 330 students in MA, and 30 students in M.Phil) and 40 faculty. PG Department of English is functioning under Vivekanandha College of Arts and Sciences for Women, an Autonomous Institution and Affiliated to Periyar University, Salem-11.

The Approach

VICAS, ENGLISH LITERATURE has a unique and innovative approach in Literary education, that is focusing on providing the right knowledge, imparting the right skills to attain success in Teaching career, and moulding right attitudes.

Updated Curriculum

The curriculum offered to the students lays the foundation for a perfect way to learning, erudition and teaching. The Literary programme is designed to closely integrate the students to know the History of English Literature and contemporary literary issues.

Student Activities Programme

At every week-end, students are encouraged to hone their skills through English Association.

Placement Hour

Every day meticulous training on placement skills from 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm.

Soft Skill Development

Having separate syllabus and practical teaching for communication skills.

Coaching Classes

Additional coaching classes are arranged for TNPSC, CIVIL SRVICE and other competitive exams.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum pass in HSC or equivalent examinations and the eligibility criteria fixed by the Periyar university and Tamilnadu Government.

  • Pass in a recognized Bachelor’s degree of minimum 3 years duration
  • Student should have 10+2+3 years pattern of Education
  • The eligibility criteria fixed by the Periyar university and Tamilnadu Government

Research Programme

  • M.Phil

PG with 55 % marks and a pass in the entrance examination conducted by the institution.

And it is subjected to the eligibility criteria fixed by the Periyar university and Tamilnadu Government.
