About the Department

The Department of Chemistry, Vivekanandha College of Arts and Sciences for Women (Autonomous), established in the year 2003 with UG & PG courses. Later it has recognized as a research department with M. Phil., and Ph.D., programme by Periyar University. This is one of the largest Chemistry Departments in this region with 575 girl students. The department has an excellent academic record and has been bagged several categories of ranks and gold medals in Periyar University Examinations.

The Department of Chemistry, Vivekanandha College of Arts And Sciences For Women (Autonomous), endeavors to be a nationally-recognized model for educating and graduating women students prepared to compete in and contribute to the ever-changing, technology-centered world of 21st century. To achieve this vision the department is committed to providing a course of study for undergraduates and post graduates in the field of chemistry which combines curriculum, scholarship and service/engagement opportunities that are high-quality, innovative and intellectually challenging and employ state-of-the-art technologies.

Mission

The mission of the Department of Chemistry, Vivekanandha College of Arts And Sciences For Women (Autonomous), is to advance the chemical sciences through the education of undergraduate and post graduate students by providing them with quality classroom, research and service opportunities. With a high standard for excellence in all three areas the department will produce students who are knowledgeable in chemistry and can think critically.

Updated Curriculam

The curriculum offered to the students, the recent developments in Physical sciences, has been included in the enriched syllabus to meet out the present day needs of academic and research, institutions and industries.

UG Course

Eligibility criteria

Candidates seeking admission to the first year Degree course (B.Sc. Chemistry) shall be required to have passed Higher Secondary Examination with Chemistry as one of the Subjects conducted by the Government of Tamil Nadu in +2 or equivalent.

Duration of the course

3 years (six semesters)

PG Courses

Eligibility criteria

Candidates seeking admission to the first year PG Degree course (M.Sc. Chemistry) shall be required to have passed B.Sc., (Chemistry) B.Sc., (Applied Chemistry) and B.Sc., (Industrial Chemistry).

Duration of the course

2 Years (4 semesters)

Research Programme

M. Phil Chemistry (FT)

Eligibility criteria

Candidates who have qualified for Post Graduate Degree of this University or any other University recognized by the Syndicate as equivalent thereto shall be eligible to register for the Degree of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.,) in their respective subjects and undergo the prescribed course of study in an approved institution or Department of this University. Candidates who have qualified for their Post Graduate Degree on or after 19th September 1991 shall be required to have obtained a minimum of 55% of marks in their respective Post Graduate Degrees to become eligible to register for the degree of the Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.,) and undergo the prescribed course of study in an approved institution or Department of this University.

For the candidates belonging to SC/ST community and those who have qualified for the Master’s degree before 19th September 1991 the minimum eligibility marks shall be 50% in their Master’s Degree.
