About the Department

Botany is a classical science dealing with not merely the morphology of plants but also their functional aspects and economic importance. Further, the study helps us to understand the role of plants in maintaining the environment besides, saving as a renewable energy sources. Plants are most valuable in treating the ailments of mankind. It has several branches such as Plant Morphology, Taxonomy, Anatomy, Embryology, Mycology, Pathology, Physiology, Ecology, Plant Diversity, Ethnobotany etc., besides serving as the basis for several other biosciences. It is a basic science with several research disciplines like modern transgenic biology.

Eligibility criteria

A candidate who has passed – Higher Secondary examination in any one of the biological sciences (Academic / Vocational Stream) under higher secondary board of Examination, Tamilnadu or as per norms set by the Government of Tamilnadu or an examination accepted as Equivalent thereto by the Syndicate subject to such conditions as may be prescribed thereto are permitted to appear and qualify for the B.Sc. Degree in Biochemistry. Examination of this university after a course of study of three academic years.

B.Sc degree in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology Botany, Zoology, Agriculture, Veterinary, Fisheries Sciences, Pharmacy, or equivalent degree recognized by the University.

M. Phil Botany (FT)

Eligibility criteria

Candidates who have qualified for Post Graduate Degree of this University or any other University recognized by the Syndicate as equivalent thereto shall be eligible to register for the Degree of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.,) in their respective subjects and undergo the prescribed course of study in an approved institution or Department of this University. Candidates who have qualified for their Post Graduate Degree on or after 19th September 1991 shall be required to have obtained a minimum of 55% of marks in their respective Post Graduate Degrees to become eligible to register for the degree of the Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.,) and undergo the prescribed course of study in an approved institution or Department of this University.

For the candidates belonging to SC/ST community and those who have qualified for the Master’s degree before 19th September 1991 the minimum eligibility marks shall be 50% in their Master’s Degree.

One year (two semesters)

Ph.D Botany (FT/ PT)

Eligibility criteria

A candidate should have obtained a Master’s degree with not less than 55% of marks or an equivalent grade. For the candidates belonging to SC/ST community and those who have qualified a Master’s degree before 19th September 1991 the minimum eligibility marks shall be 50% in their Master’s degree.

Duration

Minimum three years and maximum period of five years for full time candidates from the period of provisional registration.

Minimum four years and maximum six years from the period of provisional registration.
